MeT Issues Important Advisory Ahead of Heavy Snowfall in Kashmir
Srinagar, January 24: Jammu and Kashmir is gearing up for the much-anticipated relief from the prolonged dry spell as the mercury takes a dip, reaching minus 5.3°C in Srinagar.
According to the Meteorological Department, the upcoming two days may witness isolated to fairly widespread light rain and snow across the region.
The MeT office has issued an advisory cautioning travelers about possible temporary closures of higher reaches and crucial passes such as Sinthan Pass, Mughal Road, Sadhna, Razdan Pass, and Zojila from January 28 to 31.
“Travellers are advised to plan accordingly,” emphasized a meteorological department official in a statement.
On February 1, there is a possibility of light rain/snow at scattered places, as per the meteorological predictions.
Temperature-wise, Srinagar experienced a low of minus 5.3°C, down from minus 5.0°C the previous night, marking a deviation of 3.0°C below the normal for this time of the year in the summer capital of J&K.
Other regions also witnessed varying temperatures, with Qazigund recording a minimum of minus 5.4°C, Pahalgam at minus 6.3°C, Kokernag at minus 2.3°C, Kupwara town at minus 5.3°C, and Gulmarg at minus 4.8°C.
Jammu, the winter capital of J&K, recorded a minimum of 2.3°C, indicating a deviation below normal by 5.3°C.
The Meteorological Department highlighted that the Kashmir valley is currently experiencing the harsh 40-day period of winter known as ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ which will continue until January 29.
However, this does not mark the end of winter, as it will be followed by ‘Chillai-Khurd’ from January 30 to February 19 and ‘Chillai-Bachha’ from February 20 to March 1.
